In this study, we aimed at demonstrating the perspective of Ab? Man??r al-M?tur?d?, founder of M?tur?diyya school of Islamic theological tradition (kal?m) on the problem of relationship between divine essence and divine attributes which had been a prennial subject of discussion in the history of Islamic theolology beginning within the first century after the pligrimage of Prophet Muhammed. Imperceptible character of God's essence and his attributes with human's sensory faculties led Islam scholars to begin with Quranic concepts attributed to god so as to be able to know him. Despite the sameness of the sourse of knowledge, however, Islamic theologians drew different conclusion concerning the problem of essence and attributes.Reviewing the literature on historical background of the discussion, that is, where the problem originated and what kind of arguments were raised by the schools of kalam, we drew on two of al-M?tur?d??s major works, Kitâbü't-Tevhîd ve Te'vîlâtü'l-Kur?ân so as to be able to determine his position in the discussions concerning the divine essence and attributes relationships. Since we did not come across any text criticizing alM?tur?d?'s approach to the issue, our work was presented in an informatory and analytical structure.Concerning the relationship between God's essence and his attributes, al-M?tur?d?'s ultimate conclusion is formulated as ?the attributes are neither identical to nor different from God?s essence?. Regarding the eternity or temporality of the attributes of God, alM?tur?d? asserts that all attributes of God are eternal. Al-M?tur?d? do not make a distinction between the attributes of action (al-?if?t al-fi`liyya) and attributes of essence (al-?if?t al-dh?tiyya) with respect to their eternity or temporality. At this point, he differs from al-Ash`ar? who claimed that the attributes of action are not eternal. xSimilarly, al-M?tur?d??s explanation for ?creating? (takw?n) differs from that of alA
