Abstract This chapter examines the early development and basic features of Maturidite theology and its possible influence on black theodicy in the U.S. Maturidism grew out of the Abu Mansur al-Maturidi and it developed in conscious opposition to Mu’tazilism. The Maturidites considered themselves as the theological enemies of Mu’tazilism while looking on the Ash’arites as initially political adversaries but later on as more or less theological competitors.
