There is no doubt that the rhetorical approach constitutes one of the key dimensions of Qur’anic inimitability (iʿjāz). From this perspective, the present study explores aspects of this miraculous eloquence as reflected in Al-Sirāj al-Munīr, the Qur’anic exegesis of Al-Khatib Al-Sharbeeni—an eminent scholar of the Shāfiʿī school. The research reveals that although primarily a jurist, Al-Sharbeeni devoted considerable attention to rhetorical analysis in his commentary, making his work a rich source for understanding the intersection of jurisprudence, grammar, and eloquence. The study aims to determine the extent of his interest in rhetorical studies and to uncover the aesthetic subtleties and expressive nuances that demonstrate his mastery of linguistic artistry. Employing both descriptive and analytical methodologies, the research traces the rhetorical phenomena within his exegesis and evaluates their interpretative significance. The findings show that Al-Sharbeeni’s style closely resembles that of al-tafsīr al-hidā’ī (guidance-oriented exegesis), characterized by brevity, clarity, and depth of meaning. His integration of linguistic and artistic elements enriches the interpretive texture of the Qur’anic text. Notably, he rejects the term sajʿ (rhymed prose), preferring fāṣilah instead, arguing that sajʿ pertains to poetry and should not be ascribed to the Qur’an. However, the study observes that Al-Sharbeeni sometimes adapts rhetorical analysis to defend his Ashʿarī theological stance, which may conflict with contextual or textual indications. The research concludes by recommending a concise version of Al-Sirāj al-Munīr following the tafsīr al-hidā’ī model, given its linguistic richness and readability, and by highlighting its rhetorical insights as a valuable area for further scholarly investigation.
