Neo-traditionalism is a modern phenomenon that appears in the form of a call for the renewal of authentic tradition and the development of a critical relationship with modernity. The central elements of the critique of modernity refer to the ‘loss of the Sacred’ and the ‘decline of metaphysics’ within the Western intellectual tradition, which was seen as a consequence of the revaluation of the value system and the cultivation of a culture of radical consumerism. On the other hand, the neo-traditionalist emphasis on the importance of authentic tradition is based on following classical theological teachings (Ash’ari-Maturidi), classical legal schools and accepting the Sufi tradition which develops practical methods of education and spiritual purification. The basic principles of the neo-traditionalist perspective in Islam will be indicated through the explication of the philosophical and theological thinking of Abdal Hakim Murad, one of the most significant representatives of Islamic neo-traditionalism and the most influential Muslim intellectual in Great Britain.
