Islamic scholars have madegreat efforts to understand the verses of the Qur’an. This has led them toresort to more than one method such as rational, narrational, lin- guistic andrhetorical. One of these scholars is Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, who is one of themost important defenders of the Ahl al-Sunnah. In this study, the way Maturidiused sarcasm in the interpretation of the verses in his Ta’wilat al-Qur’an isanalyzed. In this context, after briefly giving information about his life and his direction ofcreed and Ta’wilat al-Qur’an, Mâtürîdî’s interpretations are discussed in abroad framework such as the purpose of using sarcasm, its frequency of use, andpla- ces of use. Particularly, the use of sarcasm in the verses where time,space, or bodily elements, which pave the way for the emergence of a lot ofscrutiny in the matter of creed, are examined. In addition, according to theAhl al-Sun- nah views, the contribution of Maturidi in the context of exaltingAllah from body, time and space has beenput forward. In the elimination of the contradictions that seem to existbetween the verses and the verses that led to conflicts in Islamic law,Maturidi’s use of sarcasm was examined. In addition, the way Maturidi usedsarcasm is revealed in the form of idioms and in the verses that are notexplicitly mentioned because they are accepted as obscene in human natüre.
