Introduction
Ta’wil, one of the most cont- roversial and highly debated concepts in the history of Islamic thought, transcends all these attempts of meaning and interpretation due to its semantic opening and its importance. Islamic scholars have frequently referred to ta’wil in their works, which they perceive as a rational, knowledge-based, scientific discipline in making sense of and reconstructing religious nusus. There is no doubt that Imam al-Maturidi al-Sa- markandi, who makes use of ta’wil in his works suc- cessfully, is the first name to come to mind among Islamic kalam scholars. According to Imam al-Maturidi, ta’wil is a scientific discipline that reveals all epistemological and ontological truths related to the relevant concept or text, beyond simply compre- hending or interpreting a text. Ta’wil bears a truth that leads people to search for new meaning and discoveries, and even entrusts them to the excitement and self-con- fidence of co-existence or cohabitation. This study provides an account of the importance of the concept of ta’wil, its scope, practices, and some necessary features that those who do ta’wil should have, according to the early Islamic kalam scholar Imam al-Ma- turidi.
