Sığnâkî (b. 714/1314[?]), one of the important Western representatives of the Hanafi-Maturidi tradition originated in the East, was raised in Maveraunnehr/Transoxiana and spent time teaching in some of the important cities where academic studies were mainly focused, such as Baghdad, Damascus, Aleppo and Cairo. He taught numerous students whose interpretations and original body of work spanned the fields of kalam, fıqh, sarf and nahv. Some Ottoman scholars such as Kemâlpaşazâde has a pedigree that can be traced back to him. Among the Ottoman scholars he mostly found fame with his interpretive work en-Nihâye based on Burhaneddin Ali b. Ebî Bekr Merginânî's (d. 593/1197) fıqh work el-Hidâye. The objective in writing his interpretation et-Tasdîd based on Ebü'l-Muîn en-Nesefî's et-Tamhîd must be his wish to "do kalam" and pass on the tradition he was a part of to the next generations. His work called et-Tasdîd fi şerhi't-Tamhîd was introduced to the academic world with our doctoral study "Mâtürîdî Âlimlerden Sığnâkî'nin (d. 714/1314) et-Tesdîd fî şerhi't-Temhîd Adlı Eserinin Tahkiki ve İlâhiyyat Konularının Tahlili" in 2016. This paper is put together after revising certain parts of the aforementioned doctoral thesis. In this study of Sığnâkî's life, his academic persona-his place in kalam and his body of work are examined.
