Mâtürîdî, peygamberliğin gerekliliğini hem akli hem nakli temellerde savunmuştur. Akıl, temel ahlâkî ilkeleri ve Allah'ın varlığını bilebilir; ancak ibâdetlerin tafsilâtı, uhrevî cezâ ve mükâfâtın mahiyeti gibi konularda aklın yetersiz kaldığı yerde peygamberlerin bildirimi zorunludur. Peygamberler ayrıca aklın ulaştığı sonuçları teyit ederek toplumsal birlikteliği sağlar.
